The world we create: Horizon (2015)
24 drawings (21x29cm) on paper using oil pastel and pencil
Drawing with the idea of composing a piece of music.
In fact, the 24 drawings that I’m presenting here as a
sequence, create a pentagram in which I have "left" my
traces, fragmented lines, circles and dots inspired by
the changing nature.

Residual Shapes
VIDEO
Residual Shapes Video sculpture 8' 42'', Francesco Bartoli 2012
-Residual Shapes,
Video 8’ 42’’
A new environment, habits
and culture invaded my entire body and pushed me to find a new way of
expressing myself. In that moment I was also thinking how to elude the pencil
on paper and to find a new relationship with the blank sheet of paper. I needed
to record these news thoughts and emotions in some way and I decided to turn them
into shapes.
I was trying to leave traces on papers, to draw in a sculptural and
physical way. The ideas that I had in that moment turned into Greek masks,
medieval Icons or many lines that would help to sketch new identities.

Drawings 2013
The work Borders, Video 4’ 15’’(London 2013) is based on the idea to create
simple works that can explore the fragile boundaries between sculpture and drawings,
performance and video, reality and fiction.
BORDERS, video creation 4’ 15’’, London 2013
Francesco Bartoli 2013
The video piece tries to reflect about the concept of borders in a more poetic
way. The video shows two bodies lying one on other
that create a flexible line (a conceptual drawing) that slowly becomes a piece
of paper with a sketch on it.
Frames from Borders, Francesco Bartoli 2013
During the creation of this work I was obsessed with the idea of distance, the real physical space that my ex partner and I had created when we split. We were still living in the same city but there was a “spot” between us.
This space appeared on my mind like a sort of
imaginary border that had it’s own changeable lengths and shapes. The line that
comes out from the union of these two bodies can be seen like a drawing that
reveals the border. In other words it’s presence divides the two bodies
but at the same time it’s the result of their union. A real border made by two people who are trying to know each
other.

“IF” (2013)
Francesco Bartoli, 2014
The idea to explore the boundaries of the act
of drawing, started with my video sculpture “Residual Shapes” (Glasgow 2012) and continued with the video
drawing “Borders” (London 2013). In these two cases, the final videos are the
results of a series of performances in which drawing is the protagonist, but drawings are not the final “product”. On the other hand, with “IF”, I try to turn the pure act of drawing in a sort of installation that can be related with a given space. In this case the drawings will come out directly from the walls, like short stories caught on them.
I’m looking forward to develop this series in a
bigger space, in order to experiment its huge potential.

Richard Tuttle once
said that artists are like clouds.
I really believe that some works that you cannot realize come out from the very inside, but sometimes they just remain gestures and forms that rapidly disappear. Therefore, this kind of embryonic works are just something that you can remember or somehow display in a very special way.
“IF” is a series of
playful wall drawings works that are ready to become breaks on walls or even
clouds in the sky, but in the meantime are just childish toys in my humble
hands.

Il Paesaggio Spezzato (The Broken Landscape)
Il Paesaggio Spezzato is an installation composed by 32 sculptures made from cardboard and little
pieces of wood. When recently I came back to Italy I had the needs to look at the Italian landscape and more specifically at the concept of “broken landscape”. I wanted to work primarily with something related with our vibrant past, but that could also be connected with the present.
Francesco Bartoli (2014)
Thus, this multidisciplinary installation comes
out from the confrontation with my territory…it reminds a landscape, but can
also be seen like an urban suburb.
This work was a challenge to me, not only
because today is difficult to approach the theme of landscape without doing a
cliché, but also because in this work I wanted to use all the media that I have
been used over the last years.
Which are photography, painting, drawing and
installation.

“Sospiri” comes from a delicate moment, when recently I
decide to move to Italy, I’m in a sort of physical transition now, so the work
reflects on this no “permanent” situation I’m living in.
Somehow this work analyze the artist figure
through the artist’s body in a special way I think.
The body here is presented as a learning tool, deconstructed and fractured, it shows its limits and its inability…so at the end the body becomes a sort of matrix, a sign and an active presence in a given space. A body that seems to say: I’m here and through my borders I get to know the world out there…the others.

In two of the three videos that compose this
series, the hands become balloons that have already lost they usefulness. The third video is a performance that represents
a self-portrait. In it, you can see me lying down, changing moments of
happiness with other of seriousness.
Sospiri, Francesco Bartoli 2014
In fact, for me drawing is like dreaming…like a
trip under my skin, under the surface of things.
My drawings come from my imagination but also come
from texts, poems, books or even dreams, basically they are more often the
results of visual connections I create along the day.
But the act itself of drawing is more similar
to the act of dreaming; I’m lost in a sort of trip, I’m kind of suspended and this process
is very interesting, because when I stop drawing is like to open the eyes again.

Moments of Reflections: Drawings from the National Gallery 2013
Over the last 10 months I got used to visit the
National Gallery in London as an exercise for my eye, hand and mind. Once or
twice a week I would go there with my sketchbook to make some personal drawings
inspired by the art collection.
I would take these weekly visits like a reflection
about the way the Old Masters painted
certain moments of our history, plus like a new reflection of the act of
drawing it self.
Love, scorn, passion, faith, war, peace, despair,
happiness, or unfaithfulness are just some of the themes that give shape to
this new series of drawings.
During the creative process that led me to
generate this new work I used the great stories from the past to speak about
concepts that I could not photograph or film.

DANCE, 2012

<< I think the poetry brings us to a pure sense of contact with our feelings. At the same time it does have a strong literary expression; but the most important thing is that it brings us to the innocent stage in which imagination and language can be most vulnerable and at the same time most penetrating. >> A.W.

SHORT STORIES ABOUT KOREA, 2012
Going for a walk in the streets of any South
Korean city is like suddenly finding oneself in an endless intersection of
intoxicating roads. Before getting
involved in any creative project, I found it convenient to ask myself a key
question: what should I fixate my attention on? I decided to concentrate on the
silence and minimal actions of those persons that enliven the dynamic Korean
society.
Frame from "Short stories about Korea", Francesco Bartoli 2012
I created these works during the five weeks I
spent in the city of Gwangju, on the occasion of its’ important art Biennale. Far from trying to understand the Story of this
country, my intention was to create a series of short stories with varying
degrees of social relevance that would talk about the routine and tasks in a
Korean metropolis. From the first
moment, I considered the appropriateness of inspiring my work on anonymous
stories, on subjects that, regardless of their “normality”, could reveal
something important about that unknown place to me.
Short stories about Korea, documentary 18'25'' 2012
In a society where the frenetic production of
technological “objects” and the enactment of old traditions are mixed to the
point of being blended, each ordinary step through the usual streets becomes a
new discovery. The markets, the public transport, the sensation of living in a continuous
periphery –in spite of being in an urban centre–, make the images that compose
this project travel from one atmosphere to another, in a culture that, as I see
it, navigates between a burning westernization and the survival of indigenous
customs.

AUTORITRATTO: SERIES ABOUT THE FAMILY 2008/2012
AUTORITRATTO is a work consisting of a video-animation and a video that forms part of a series inspired in my family and which also includes the video-animation FABER, the artist’s book BETWEEN US and the creative documentary AS IF I WASN’T HERE.

Drawing, Francesco Bartoli 2012
This four works were developed at three different stages of my life but belong to the same train of thought. Three different media joined together by my reflections on the place where I was raised and the personages that still inhabit it. The strangeness experienced when I encountered the same context years later, the memories that came up in the conversations about the past, and a constant examination on my present role as an artist, are just some of the emotions and themes developed in this series.

I was looking for understanding in a place I had always believed to be little receptive and instead found acceptance and unlimited respect; a kind of abnegation that the members of my family feel towards a person that was able to become detached from the overwhelming bond one has with his roots. The contradictory feelings and the doubts experienced during my short visits home prompted this ever-changing self-portrait composed of the places and characters of my childhood. However, I voluntarily left out from this autoritratto the images of my present.
