The world we create: Horizon (2015)

24 drawings (21x29cm) on paper using oil pastel and pencil

Drawing with the idea of composing a piece of music.
In fact, the 24 drawings that I’m presenting here as a
sequence, create a pentagram in which I have "left" my
traces, fragmented lines, circles and dots inspired by
the changing nature.

The world we create: Horizon (2015) Francesco Bartoli

The entire series creates an horizontal line of 7 meters long.

Residual Shapes

VIDEO
Residual Shapes Video sculpture 8' 42'', Francesco Bartoli 2012

-Residual Shapes, Video 8’ 42’’

A new environment, habits and culture invaded my entire body and pushed me to find a new way of expressing myself. In that moment I was also thinking how to elude the pencil on paper and to find a new relationship with the blank sheet of paper. I needed to record these news thoughts and emotions in some way and I decided to turn them into shapes.
I was trying to leave traces on papers, to draw in a sculptural and physical way. The ideas that I had in that moment turned into Greek masks, medieval Icons or many lines that would help to sketch new identities.

Drawings 2013

The work Borders, Video 4’ 15’’(London 2013) is based on the idea to create simple works that can explore the fragile boundaries between sculpture and drawings, performance and video, reality and fiction.

The video piece tries to reflect about the concept of borders in a more poetic way. The video shows two bodies lying one on other that create a flexible line (a conceptual drawing) that slowly becomes a piece of paper with a sketch on it.

During the creation of this work I was obsessed with the idea of distance, the real physical space that my ex partner and I had created when we split. We were still living in the same city but there was a “spot” between us.
This space appeared on my mind like a sort of imaginary border that had it’s own changeable lengths and shapes. The line that comes out from the union of these two bodies can be seen like a drawing that reveals the border. In other words it’s presence divides the two bodies but at the same time it’s the result of their union.  A real border made by two people who are trying to know each other.

“IF” (2013)

Francesco Bartoli, 2014

The idea to explore the boundaries of the act of drawing, started with my video sculpture “Residual Shapes” (Glasgow 2012) and continued with the video drawing “Borders” (London 2013). In these two cases, the final videos are the results of a series of performances in which drawing is the protagonist, but drawings are not the final “product”. On the other hand, with “IF”,  I try to turn the pure act of drawing in a sort of installation that can be related with a given space. In this case  the drawings will come out directly from the walls, like short stories caught on them.
I’m looking forward to develop this series in a bigger space, in order to experiment its huge potential.

Richard Tuttle once said that artists are like clouds.
I really believe that some works that you cannot realize come out from the very inside, but sometimes they just remain gestures and forms that rapidly disappear. Therefore, this kind of embryonic works are just something that you can remember or somehow display in a very special way.
“IF” is a series of playful wall drawings works that are ready to become breaks on walls or even clouds in the sky, but in the meantime are just childish toys in my humble hands.
