SOSPIRI (2014)

It is a quite complex and complete installation composed by a Video Performance, two HD Videos, a Photograph and 60 Drawings using pencil and oil pastel.

Video

“Sospiri” comes from a delicate moment, when recently I decide to move to Italy, I’m in a sort of physical transition now, so the work reflects on this no “permanent” situation I’m living in.
Somehow this work analyze the artist figure through the artist’s body in a special way I think.
The body here is presented as a learning tool, deconstructed and fractured, it shows its limits and its inability…so at the end the body becomes a sort of matrix, a sign and an active presence in a given space. A body that seems to say: I’m here and through my borders I get to know the world out there…the others.

Sospiri, Francesco Bartoli 2014

In two of the three videos that compose this series, the hands become balloons that have already lost they usefulness. The third video is a performance that represents a self-portrait. In it, you can see me lying down, changing moments of happiness with other of seriousness.

Sospiri, Francesco Bartoli 2014

Drawing is a fundamental medium for my art investigation, but I would like to say that it is not the medium I use to analyze the “world”, rather is like the opposite, it is my way to escape from reality.
In fact, for me drawing is like dreaming…like a trip under my skin, under the surface of things.
My drawings come from my imagination but also come from texts, poems, books or even dreams, basically they are more often the results of visual connections I create along the day.

But the act itself of drawing is more similar to the act of dreaming; I’m lost in a sort of trip, I’m kind of suspended and this process is very interesting, because when I stop drawing is like to open the eyes again.

Moments of Reflections: Drawings from the National Gallery 2013

Over the last 10 months I got used to visit the National Gallery in London as an exercise for my eye, hand and mind. Once or twice a week I would go there with my sketchbook to make some personal drawings inspired by the art collection.
I would take these weekly visits like a reflection about the way the Old Masters painted certain moments of our history, plus like a new reflection of the act of drawing it self.
Love, scorn, passion, faith, war, peace, despair, happiness, or unfaithfulness are just some of the themes that give shape to this new series of drawings.
During the creative process that led me to generate this new work I used the great stories from the past to speak about concepts that I could not photograph or film.

My drawings are often the outcomes of my reflection about real issues mixed with my own memories, dreams o fantasy.
The complete series is composed by 22 drawings (30x22) on paper using oil pastel and pencil.

Innocent stage

DANCE, 2012

Frame from "Dance", Francesco Bartoli 2012
<< I think the poetry brings us to a pure sense of contact with our feelings. At the same time it does have a strong literary expression; but the most important thing is that it brings us to the innocent stage in which imagination and language can be most vulnerable and at the same time most penetrating. >> A.W.

SHORT STORIES ABOUT KOREA, 2012

Going for a walk in the streets of any South Korean city is like suddenly finding oneself in an endless intersection of intoxicating roads. Before getting involved in any creative project, I found it convenient to ask myself a key question: what should I fixate my attention on? I decided to concentrate on the silence and minimal actions of those persons that enliven the dynamic Korean society.

Frame from "Short stories about Korea", Francesco Bartoli 2012

I created these works during the five weeks I spent in the city of Gwangju, on the occasion of its’ important art Biennale. Far from trying to understand the Story of this country, my intention was to create a series of short stories with varying degrees of social relevance that would talk about the routine and tasks in a Korean metropolis.  From the first moment, I considered the appropriateness of inspiring my work on anonymous stories, on subjects that, regardless of their “normality”, could reveal something important about that unknown place to me.

Short stories about Korea, documentary 18'25'' 2012

In a society where the frenetic production of technological “objects” and the enactment of old traditions are mixed to the point of being blended, each ordinary step through the usual streets becomes a new discovery. The markets, the public transport, the sensation of living in a continuous periphery –in spite of being in an urban centre–, make the images that compose this project travel from one atmosphere to another, in a culture that, as I see it, navigates between a burning westernization and the survival of indigenous customs.

AUTORITRATTO: SERIES ABOUT THE FAMILY 2008/2012

AUTORITRATTO is a work consisting of a video-animation and a video that forms part of a series inspired in my family and which also includes the video-animation FABER, the artist’s book BETWEEN US and the creative documentary AS IF I WASN’T HERE.

Drawing, Francesco Bartoli 2012

This four works were developed at three different stages of my life but belong to the same train of thought. Three different media joined together by my reflections on the place where I was raised and the personages that still inhabit it. The strangeness experienced when I encountered the same context years later, the memories that came up in the conversations about the past, and a constant examination on my present role as an artist, are just some of the emotions and themes developed in this series.

I was looking for understanding in a place I had always believed to be little receptive and instead found acceptance and unlimited respect; a kind of abnegation that the members of my family feel towards a person that was able to become detached from the overwhelming bond one has with his roots. The contradictory feelings and the doubts experienced during my short visits home prompted this ever-changing self-portrait composed of the places and characters of my childhood. However, I voluntarily left out from this autoritratto the images of my present.
