A few years ago, I read an article claiming that Uruguay was a country devoid of indigenous
culture. The news shocked me and I decided to delve deeper. I arrived in Uruguay in March
2022 with a three-month artistic research grant awarded to me by the Italian Ministry of Culture.
I soon realized that Uruguay was suffering from induced historical amnesia.
The artistic project “ECOS: the power of fragments” was born out of the desire to discover,
highlight, and interpret the lost material culture and oral memory of Uruguay’s native peoples.
A special focus was dedicated to the symbolism characterizing their birth, death, and
transition rituals, and their relationship with the natural environment.
